Note of gratitude

In 2008 I walked into the Brothers K Coffeehouse to ask the owner whether I may post a flyer advertising my freelance graphic design services on their bulletin board. After posing that question to and meeting John for the first time, he asked whether I would be interested in designing the shop’s first website. Having never done any web design whatsoever, I naturally agreed to undertake the project.

Somehow, miraculously, the website brought freelance clients to me and, having been laid-off during the recession -- work that sustained my family for several years and laid the foundation for my ongoing career in brand, UX, and SaaS product design. I’m forever grateful to John and Brian for taking a chance on me back then, and again to John for trusting me with the design of this new generation of the Brothers K website.

About the design

From the outset it was clear to me that it would be fun to make visual reference to the literary association between the coffeeshop’s name The Brothers K and Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel The Brothers Karamazov.

A Moleskine notebook became the canvas for the site, with small bookmark tabs serving as the page navigation.
