About

History

The Brothers K Coffehouse was opened in 2005 by Brian and John Kim under the belief that the quality of life experienced by those who wake up every morning can be markedly enhanced by a warm welcome and a cup of really good coffee.

Frequented by people from many walks of life, the shop has become a beloved neighborhood hang-out and a popular place to work for telecommuters and students.

The Pigeons K

Illustration of the Pigeons K by Jay Ryan

John asked me to help examine the long-standing relationship between Brothers K and south-east Evanston. John wanted to pay tribute to how welcoming the residents of the neighborhood have always been to the business, and how the coffee shop, a staple of civilized society, has tried to return the love by serving as a meeting place, a de facto community center, a "third-place" destination, and a landmark. Instead of doing this, I drew John and Brian as pigeons and put little hats on them.”

George

Photo of the painting "George" by Carla Hayden on display inside Brothers K Coffee.

Created by local artist and musician Carla Hayden. The brothers loved the painting depicting a local resident and longtime regular of the coffeeshop. George would come in every morning for his cup of coffee and hang with his buddies around the same table. We feel his warm smile, and the soft color palette of the painting give us the good vibes.
